BROOMFIELD, CO – Police have confirmed that a 37-year-old man was believed to have been impaired when he caused a crash along Broomfield High School that claimed the lives of two people.
To recap, this collision happened before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12, on Main Street. New information indicated that the crash unfolded when the 37-year-old man — Jose Menjivar — drove a 2000 Toyota Tundra and then collided with a 2016 Mazda CX-5 driven by 47-year-old Melissa Powell.
🧵NEWS RELEASE 12/15/23: The Broomfield Police Department has arrested one person in connection with Tuesday’s (12/12/23) fatal crash at Main Street and Miramonte Boulevard, near Broomfield High School.
Powell and her 16-year-old son would go on to pass away from fatal wounds, while Menjivar was the person who was hospitalized for serious injuries.
Menjivar has since been released and booked into the Broomfield County Jail. He has been charged with “Vehicular Homicide Reckless, Vehicular Homicide DUI and Habitual Traffic Offender.”
Police are currently waiting on a toxicology report. They have not provided other comments at this time.
