COMMERCE CITY, CO – A driver of a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck suspected of DUI was booked into jail after crashing into four first responders who sustained injuries Thursday.

This collision happened on I-76 at mile marker 13, adjacent to the 10600 block. KDVR said that due to the initial crash, fire crews blocked the first and second lanes to accommodate the scene clearance process. Despite the blockage, motorists were able to get around the accident by driving on the right shoulder.

However, instead of driving on the right shoulder, the Toyota Tacoma driver drove on the left and struck two Commerce City police officers and two Commerce City firefighters. All of these emergency responders were then sent to area hospitals.

One firefighter sustained minor wounds, and the other firefighter was seriously injured. As of now, both are in stable condition. Both officers suffered minor injuries. All authorities are recovering.

The pickup truck driver, who was later identified as 24-year-old Benjamin Winters, a Brighton resident, was taken to Adams County Jail.
