Colorado’s Motorcycle Licensing Requirements

November 15, 2024Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcycles are entirely unique from standard passenger cars. Operating a motorcycle requires a completely different set of knowledge and skills. For this reason, motorists in Colorado must obtain special motorcycle license endorsements before they are qualified to legally operate these vehicles on public roads. This is particularly important when considering the complexities that may arise in a Denver motorcycle accident case, as proper licensing and training can play a crucial role in both safety and liability.

Getting the Class “M” Endorsement in Colorado

In Colorado, rather than having two separate types of licenses, Colorado requires an “M” endorsement to be added to an existing driver’s license to operate a motorcycle. This endorsement cannot be added over the phone, online or by mail. It must be done in person at a state driver’s license office. A rider must be at least 16 years old to apply for the motorcycle endorsement.

Motorcycle Instruction Permit

If you are under 18 years old, you will need to complete an approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation training course to get a Motorcycle Instruction Permit. This course involves both classroom instruction and training on a motorcycle. The program will send your certificate of completion to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) so that you can continue on to the next step. You will also need to pass a written motorcycle knowledge exam. The written test covers general knowledge regarding the safe operation of a motorcycle, in addition to facts about basic road signs and traffic laws. Finally, you will need to pass a vision screening test (eye exam). After completing all of these requirements, you will be issued a Motorcycle Instruction Permit. With the permit, you can lawfully operate a motorcycle, but you are not allowed to carry any passengers and you cannot ride between the hours of dusk and dawn. You will have to have your Motorcycle Instruction Permit for at least one year before obtaining a motorcycle license endorsement if you are under the age of 18.

Option: Skip the Training Course

If you are over the age of 18, you can get a Motorcycle Instruction Permit without completing the training course. However, the course is still highly recommended for safety reasons, as it teaches motorcyclists how to avoid serious accidents. As an alternative to the training course, you can pass a motorcycle drive skills test. Contact your nearest DMV to schedule an appointment, as this test must be done in person with a DMV representative.

Option: Skip the Skills Test

Finally, if you are over the age of 18 and already have a valid driver’s license, you can complete a Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST) course and skip any additional testing. You can simply show your completion card to a DMV office and purchase a new license to get one with a motorcycle endorsement.

How Much Does it Cost to Get a Motorcycle License in Colorado?

The fee for a Motorcycle Instruction Permit in Colorado is typically around $16. The fee for an “M” endorsement on a driver’s license ranges from $15 to $25, depending on whether you are adding it to an existing license or applying for a separate motorcycle-only license. Keep in mind that the price of the motorcycle endorsement is only the beginning; you will also need to spend money on the motorcycle and all of your required gear, which may include a motorcycle helmet and other gear to protect yourself from injury in the event of an accident. If you take a motorcycle training course, the cost can range from around $400 to $500.

Penalties for Riding Without a License

It is against the law to operate a motorcycle on a public road without a valid and correctly endorsed motorcycle license in Colorado. The penalties for this offense can include a fine plus court costs, up to 40 hours of required community service, up to four points added to your driver’s license, and possible license suspension.
