GOLDEN, CO – Jefferson County officials have officially confirmed on Thursday that a DUI driver responsible for causing a crash that claimed the life of a Golden Police officer has been officially charged with vehicular homicide.
New details from 9 News have identified the impaired motorist as 43-year-old Stephen Geer, who made a court appearance at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14. Aside from vehicular homicide, Geer faces two counts of vehicular assault, Third-degree assault, and Driving under the influence. However, he has posted bond and is out of custody, although he will have to make another court appearance.
To recap, the events unfolded when the late officer, identified as Evan Dunn, and his patrol partner, later identified as Brittany Grusing, were responding to a reported collision that happened after 4:30 p.m. last Wednesday, Nov. 6, at CO 58 and Washington Ave. The involved vehicles were later confirmed to be a pink Toyota Tacoma and a silver Subaru, both of which were blocking a left lane.
Dunn and Grusing’s patrol vehicle, with activated emergency lights, was behind the affected vehicles, and just as both officers were investigating the circumstances behind this initial wreck, Geer, operating a black Mazda, failed to move over to the right lane and struck the Pink Tacoma, which rammed into the Subaru and then directly struck Grusing and Dunn and two other occupants, the female driver of the Toyota, and her father who came to assist his daughter.
The father of the Toyota driver was thrown over the jersey barrier into the westbound lanes, and the Toyota driver suffered a skull fracture. Grusing suffered a facial fracture, while Dunn got pinned underneath the Subaru and passed away.
The Golden Police Department and Dunn’s loved ones gathered for a private funeral service at Mission Hills Church in Littleton, Colorado, on Nov. 13, and Golden locals were seen on the streets of Golden paying their respects for Dunn and his family on Wednesday.
An arrest affidavit also noted that road conditions were snowy and icy at the time of the wreck. While unconfirmed, they may have played a role in this crash.
